1940’s - New Placement of Boats

The fishing fleet was the first to move, with new docks created for fishing boats that were moved to the 14th Street Dock. A new net shed structure was built as a workspace and storage for fishermen. Fishermen’s Boat Shop, an important support facility to commercial fishing, was also relocated to the north Waterfront.

Over time, pleasure boat moorage began to shift to the 14th Street Dock Basin. To accommodate this change, the Port created land by filling the area from 14th Street Dock to about 12th Street, creating the beginning of the Marina that we know today.

Before there were cranes to hoist boats out of the water, boat repairs were contingent on the ebb and flow of the tides. Most repair work would occur during the low tides of the day in the tidal flats.
