1940s - World War II

The start of US involvement in World War II required the relocation of the commercial fishing fleet from the East Waterway to the 14th Street area. In 1944, to support the commercial fishing fleet, netsheds were built.

The fishing industry was impacted by World War II.   Due to the threat of attacks in Pacific waters, salmon fishing was curtailed along the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. Later, the same technological improvements developed during the war would change the industry by improved navigation aids, such as fathometers, sonar depth sounders and radar.
